Recognising the fact that adult literacy is the key to improve the standard of living and quality of human resources, New Zoi has been implenting their Adult Literacy programme, setting up Centres in local communities providing basic literacy skills (especially to women) in the 15-55 age group. Students at these Centres were either never enrolled at a school, or dropped out of school before acquiring literacy skills.
Women also receive information on parenting, hygiene, health, nutrition and taking care of their finances. After completing the 6-month course, students are able to:
- achieve the basic literacy equivalent of grade three
- read simple text in Urdu
- write a simple letter
- manage figures up to four digits, being able to add, subtract, multiply and divide.
To set up one such Centre, fully resource it and pay the salary of a trained teacher for 6 months, costs GBP 990.
