Amnougar Project

Amnougar's story began in 1999 and it is an amazing story!  The vision was to have a place where disabled adults from all over Morocco could learn skills, and a profession, giving them dignity and self-worth, a place in the community and an opportunity to set up a small business.  This was an unreachable dream for many, before Amnougar came into being.  Now this dream has come true for several hundred disabled adults, and it continues to do so.

After construction was completed and being located next to a water table, a pump was installed.  With water now readily available, agriculture training started in 2005.  With the addition of 2 annexes, carpentry and jewellery training was offered in 2006, with sewing and cooking added shortly after.  Training is offered in one of these 5 different skills, for a period of 2 years.  Having started out with just 7 trainees, the average number per year is now 35.

This work is changing many lives for those whose fate was to be hidden from, and shunned by, society.  One former student said: "From staying at home to working and selling, people recognise my ability".  This is a huge shift in attitude and apprentices and their families note marked gains in confidence, autonomy and social participation.

It costs £1,940 per year, for each student.

The project welcomes visitors to see and experience for themselves, and you can view their website here (opens in a new window): Amnougar Project

The personal transformation is as impactful as the land transformation you can clearly see here.  On completion of their training, the students receive a starter kit of tools/materials appropriate to their new skill as well as recognised diploma which can lead to employment or setting up their own business.
